1.1.1 Surveillance in Public Places

At the time this report was prepared, the Committee was engaged in discussions with the New South Wales Police Service about the installation of video surveillance cameras in public places throughout the State. The Committee was participating actively in the assessment of a trial of video surveillance cameras in the entertainment precinct of George Street, Sydney. In addition, the Committee was engaged in discussions with various local government authorities about the use of video surveillance in various public places under the control of local Councils.

The Committee has expressed its concerns about a number of matters arising from these developments and is keeping them under close scrutiny. The Committee may well be taking these matters further in due course. However for the purposes of this Report, the Committee will not be discussing any matters arising from the use of video surveillance either by law enforcement authorities or in public places.
