on the extension of the period during which the funds laid down in the Fourth Protocol on financial and technical cooperation between the European Community and the Republic of Cyprus may be committed

THE COUNCIL OF THE EUROPEAN UNION,

of the one part, and

THE GOVERNMENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF CYPRUS,

of the other part,

ANXIOUS to pursue the objectives of the Fourth Protocol on financial and technical cooperation between the European Community and the Republic of Cyprus, signed on 30 October 1995, to reach the targets of the Agreement establishing an Association between the European Economic Community and the Republic of Cyprus and to facilitate Cyprus' transition with a view to its accession to the European Union,

CONSCIOUS of the difficulties which will not allow the full commitment of the funds made available under the Protocol before their date of expiry,

HAVE DECIDED to amend the Protocol by extending to 31 December 1999 the period during which the funds made available thereunder may be committed and to this end have designated their plenipotentiaries:

WHO, having exchanged their full powers, found in good and due form,

HAVE AGREED AS FOLLOWS:

Article 1

The date on 31 December 1998, by which the funds (ECU 74 million in total) made available under the Protocol on financial and technical cooperation between the European Community and the Republic of Cyprus are to be committed, as laid down in Article 2 of that Protocol, shall be replaced by 31 December 1999.

Article 2

This Protocol shall be annexed to the Agreement establishing an Association between the European Economic Community and the Republic of Cyprus.

Article 3

1. This Protocol shall be subject to approval in accordance with the Contracting Parties' own procedures; the Contracting Parties shall notify each other that the procedures necessary to this end have been completed.

2. This Protocol shall enter into force on the date on which the notifications provided for in paragraph 1 have been given.

Article 4

This Protocol is drawn up in two original copies in the Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and Swedish languages, each of these texts being equally authentic.
